Michele Levine, Chief Executive Officer, Roy Morgan, says:

“New Zealanders have given resounding ‘thumbs down’ to US President Donald Trump’s decision earlier this week to declare that the US believes Jerusalem is the capital of Israel with 75% of New Zealanders opposing Trump’s decision and only 25% in support.

“The level of opposition in New Zealand is almost identical to the result in neighbours Australia where 76% of Australians oppose Trump’s decision. Opposition in New Zealand is strongest amongst supporters of governing coalition partners Labour (88%) and the Greens (90%) although interestingly it is supporters of the third governing partner that are most in favour of Trump’s call – 49% support Trump’s decision cf. 51% oppose.

“A greater majority of women (83%) than men (65%) oppose Trump’s decision and clear majorities of all age groups and regions are also in clear opposition to the decision. Interestingly, it is those in the capital city of Wellington (83%) that are most opposed on a regional basis ahead of Canterbury (80%) and Auckland (77%).”

Finding No. 7445 – This special Roy Morgan SMS Survey was conducted with a representative cross-section of 960 New Zealanders on December 14-15, 2017. They were asked “Do you support or oppose President Donald Trump’s recent decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel?”
